Something More Than Night

(Daniel Eisenberg, 2003, USA)
73mins, Digital Projection

Filmed across the muted canvas of Chicago’s culturally diverse neighborhoods, Something More Than Night is a turn-of-the-20th-century document of a city during a transformative period of immigration. A stationary camera observes various locations—including empty loading docks, offices with late-night employees scanning computers, fast food queues, expansive shopping malls and other public spaces—in blue-collar communities. Shot in the years directly following the September 11th attacks, the film’s editing breaks conventional cinematic tropes of continuity and space, opting for a montage of images as complex as the city itself. This meditative portrait of Chicago at night is captured on richly textured 16mm film stock.
