Title: I Always Promised You a Rose Garden
Year: 2021
Materials: Vintage kimono silk, cotton floss, glass beads. 5” round
I permanently relocated to Manhattan in February 2020, and then the world stopped and the city I loved to explore was closed to me. That spring, when I began to tentatively step outside again, I at first limited myself to parks, mainly Central and Riverside Parks. And there I found that, despite the nightmare still surrounding us, the roses were starting to bloom. So many things had changed but the beauty of the roses was a constant. I had to capture this feeling.
My clients inspired me. I have been a Certified Feng Shui Practitioner for more than 22 years, specializing in using art to help clients attract wealth, harmony, love, and so much more. I frequently recommend hanging “something small” with an image in the appropriate colors, shapes, and meaning when a Feng Shui correction or “cure" is necessary. My clients have in the past suggested I created my own line of these corrections - but I have never found the time. Being confined inside during the pandemic game me the time, and the incentive, to create this series of 5” and 6” embroidered creations that I call “Feng Shui Fixers.”
Since this is a craft I developing out of the need to feel connected and create during the pandemic, the message to future generations is that art is essential to help us get through life’s hardships. I did get to see Craft Front & Center in person, and what resonated most was how contemporary artists have adapted and updated the legacy of craft and explored new boundaries. For my craft, I am combining vintage and new materials into a fresh perspective
