Though Mexican jeweler Martacarmela Sotelo originally studied architecture, when she graduated from university she jumped into object design before deciding to pursue her MFA at Central Saint Martins in London. It was there that she lit upon the concept that would guide her future research: memory. She developed her own printmaking techniques to appropriate the memories that objects leave behind them. Through the guidance of different workshops and her own ongoing investigations, she came to create wearable pieces from printed memory. One of her projects is the Knitted Gems collection, where she creates gems out of steel wire using a classic crochet technique. Through her use of materials and color, as well as her processes and traditional techniques, Sotelo aims to stimulate our own personal memories.
