As early as age twelve, Louis Velasquez took an interest in the small and the precious, particularly jewelry and gemstones. While at New York City’s High School of Music and Art in the late 60s, he was already receiving commissions to make jewelry for his friends. After spending many years at a small jewelry manufacturing company, he gladly entered the world of art and design. His current work is an outgrowth of earlier experiments combining original computer graphic artwork with acrylic. These new pieces are based on the concept of arranging small squares, strips and triangles of colored acrylic to create new colors when overlapped, or layering them over digital prints to add visual complexity. While geometry was the one course in high school that Velasquez struggled with, now these basic forms are essential to his concept of Art to Wear.
