Born in the heart of Minho in northern Portugal, a land of traditions and festivals, strong women, stunning costumes and family gold, Liliana Guerreiro believes that jewels are more than mere adornment. They’re objects of worship that keep us company—talismans with which we can play, entertain ourselves and unwind. Growing up with this heritage had a great influence on Guerreiro, who completed her degree in art and jewelry at ESAD Escola Superior de Artes e Design in Matosinhos, and has had her own atelier since 2002. The forms of her work are derived from manual manufacturing processes rather than pre-established designs—this is especially notable of the filigree work that she develops with master goldsmiths Joaquim and Guilherme Rodrigues. The delicacy of her jewelry stems not only from the essential elements of filigree, but also from Guerreiro’s understanding of its various working techniques.
