National School Walkout—Banner-Making Workshop with Emily Oliveira

Thu, Apr 19 / 6–8 pm

Are you planning to participate in the National School Walkout on April 20th?

Join us Thursday April 19th starting at 6pm to make a reusable banner, pin, or patch for the walkout with textile artist Emily Oliveira. All materials will be provided, and all teens and their allies are welcome.

Emily Oliveira works in traditionally domestic textile and decorative materials, scrambling the imagery to explore and perform queer, utopian futurity. During her tenure as an artist in residence at MAD, Oliveira will create a series of hand-embroidered, sequined banners, evoking Latin American and Catholic devotional textiles, to examine the labor of grief and the language of queer grieving on both personal and political scales.

What is National School Walkout?

An initiative of the student-led movement for gun control, the National School Walkout calls for high school students to walk out on April 20, the 19th anniversary of the Columbine shooting, from at 10:00 a.m. local time until the end of the school day. The walkout encourages students to stay on campus in a common space for 17 minutes of silence in honor of the 17 people killed at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, and then to participate in an open mic.
