MAD Members’ Fall NYC Makers Day Trip

Join the Museum of Arts and Design for behind-the-scenes studio visits to artists, designers and makers featured in MAD’s exhibition NYC Makers: The MAD Biennial.  The day-long trip will include a visit to artist-in-residence Caroline Woolard’s studio at the Queens Museum and a tour of the expanded galleries of the Museum, and as well as a tour to the Textile Arts Center in Brooklyn with NYC Makers participant Isa Rodrigues.

Guests will travel via private chartered bus to Queens Museum

Queens Museum
The group will visit the new expanded galleries of the Queens Museum. In November 2013, the Queens Museum completed an expansion project led by Grimshaw Architects, which doubled its space to 105,000 square feet. The tour will include the Panorama of the City of New York and an exhibition tour including architecture and history of the building.

The group will meet artist Caroline Woolard who is featured in NYC Makers: The MAD Biennial.  Woolard is an artist-in-resident at the Queens Museum as part of the Studio Residency Program that was established when the Museum was expanded in 2013. Woolard is based in Brooklyn, making media, sculptures, furniture, and events. Her practice is research-based and collaborative. Woolard graduated from Cooper Union in 2006 with a strong commitment to the solidarity economy movement and to conceptual art. Woolard is currently preparing to give the annual E. F. Schumacher Lecture and to present her work at the Brooklyn Museum of Art.

Lunch
A pre-fixe lunch will be provided at a local seasonal restaurant.

Isa Rodrigues at the Textile Arts Center, Brooklyn
The group will tour the Textile Arts Center with Adult Programs Director, Isa Rodrigues, who is a textile enthusiast from Portugal, now based in Brooklyn. Her work is featured as part of MAD’s NYC Makers: The MAD Biennial. Rodrigues has an MA in Textile Conservation from the Universidade Nova de Lisboa in Portugal with a focus in natural dyes, and has worked as a textile conservator for museums and art galleries, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art. The Textile Arts Center is a NYC-based resource facility dedicated to raising awareness and understanding of textiles through creative educational programs for children and adults in techniques such as weaving, sewing, and dyeing.

TRIP NOTES

CANCELLATIONS & REFUNDS: Participants may cancel their trip(s) up until Tuesday, September 16, 2014. After that date, the full cost of the trip is non-refundable. The Museum of Arts and Design reserves the right to cancel the trip(s) if there are fewer than 15 participants or for unforeseeable circumstances. Upon reservation, participants assume responsibility for their physical abilities to travel and must notify the Museum of any health or physical conditions and/or allergies (including dietary restrictions) that may hinder their ability to fully participate in this trip.

RESERVATION AND ITINERARY POLICY: Each trip may be limited to 25 participants and reservations will be taken in order of receipt on a first-come, first-served basis. The itineraries provided are provisional. If any changes are made, be assured that the quality of the program will be maintained. The trip(s) include(s) transportation via private coach; pick-up and drop off at the Museum of Arts and Design; curatorial comment; lunch (alcohol is not included with any meals); gratuities; admission fees, administration costs; and tour preparation. We encourage you to wear comfortable shoes and dress appropriately for the weather.

*Please note that we cannot guarantee an exact return time to the Museum of Arts and Design due to traffic and unforeseen road conditions. All participants will return to the Museum of Arts and Design. The coach cannot make stops before returning to the Museum.

Please review our health and safety protocols before you arrive. MAD strongly recommends all visitors six months and older are vaccinated against Covid-19 and visitors ages two and up wear face coverings, even if vaccinated. Thank you for your cooperation.
