Featured Artist Demonstration: Centre for Fine Print Research

Tue, Nov 5–Sat, Nov 9

Peter TIng, Bristol Tea Cup, 2012

Stephen Hoskins and David Huson will demonstrate methods of 3D printing ceramics using two types of patented materials. The first is a powder deposition process that uses an ink jet binder to glue the individual powder ceramics together, which is fired in the same manner as conventional ceramics. The second is a self-glazing once fired 3D printed ceramic process based upon ancient Egyptian Faience, the worlds first glazed ceramics from the fifth century BCE. This is a pressure driven process that lays down a continuous bead of ceramic clay, which can be fired in 10 minutes in a conventional microwave. Museum visitors are invited to the Open Studios to meet these artists and learn more about the ceramic 3D printing process.

He was awarded the 2011 Saxby Medal by the Royal Photographic Society for achievement in the field of three-dimensional imaging in recognition of his pioneering research. His body of work includes over twenty peer-reviewed papers at international conferences including three focal papers at the IS&T Digital Fabrication Conferences and a patent  'A Method of 3D Printing Ceramics' which has been licensed to Viridis.

Stephen Hoskins is the Hewlett Packard Professor of Fine Print and
Director of the Centre for Fine Print Research UWE. Apart from being a practicing printmaker, his primary areas of research are; the potential of 3D printing and related digital technologies for the arts, plus the tactile surface of the printed artefact and its consequences for digital technology. His latest book 3D Printing for the Visual Arts :Technology That Crosses Both Art and Industry will be published by Bloomsbury in 2013.
