Design Happy Hour: Self-Expression with Clay

Wed, Mar 11, 2020

POSTPONED

Enjoy an open bar of wine and beer while learning traditional methods of working with clay to create personalized, hand-shaped ceramics with Artist Studios alum Natalia Arbelaez. Arbelaez will take inspiration from her work—as well as the 2019 Burke Prize ceramic artists Linda Lopez, Salvador Jimenez-Flores, and Raven Halfmoon—to engage participants in the craft's rich expression of history, identity, and culture. Pinch, coil, and mold clay to sculpt your own perfectly imperfect expression of you! No previous experience necessary. Ceramics will be fired at MAD and available for pickup after the workshop.

Natalia Arbelaez is a Colombian-American artist born and raised in Miami, Florida to immigrant parents. Arbelaez’s ceramics employ traditional Latin American and Amerindian processes and iconography to consider the ways historical and personal influences impact cultural identities. Arbelaez’s work has been exhibited nationally and is included in collections such as the Everson Museum and The Frederik Meijer Gardens. Arbelaez was recognized by the National Council on Education for Ceramic Arts as a 2018 Emerging Artist, and was a resident artist in the ceramics program of the Office of the Arts at Harvard University, and an artist in residence at MAD. Arbelaez received her MFA in ceramics from The Ohio State University and a BFA with a concentration in sculpture and ceramics from Florida International University.
