Crafting Memory Ware Pots

Inspired by the evocative objects on view in the exhibition Haas Brothers: Uncanny Valley, mixed-media collage artist and MAD Artist Studios alum Kat Ryals will lead an intensive workshop in the folk art tradition of "memory ware." Dating to the early nineteenth century and linked to African and African American burial practices, memory ware vessels were made by decorating everyday containers — bottles, vases, and jugs — with small keepsakes embedded in a clay-like material, resulting in objects rich with personal significance and storytelling.

This is a workshop for all skill levels. Participants should wear clothes suitable for a hands-on art activity. The clay dough ingredients will be hand-mixed by participants. The ingredients are non-toxic and gloves will be provided Small terra cotta pots and decorative mosaic materials will be provided, though participants are welcome to bring their own vessel and any small trinkets, jewelry, or keepsakes to embed in their design.

NOTE: If you have a gluten allergy, please note that wheat flour will be used to make the clay dough.
