For the exhibition Atmosphere for Enjoyment: Harry Bertoia’s Environment for Sound, MAD commissioned two new sound and video recordings to be made at Harry Bertoia’s Sonambient Barn from New York–based musicians Lizzi Bougatsos and Robert Aiki Aubrey Lowe. In July, Bougastos and Lowe will also create site-responsive compositions with the installation of Sonambient sculptures on view in the gallery and perform the pieces to a live audience. Bougatsos’ project, Gang Gang Dance, has been described as ‘percussive-minded,’ with influences ranging from Brian Eno to world music. Under the alias Lichens, Lowe creates live, spontaneous, and otherworldly compositions. The artists share an emphasis on ambient sound and a dedication to improvisation, making them a natural fit for animating the Sonambient sounding sculptures.
