Muhammad Ali, The Greatest

Fri, Apr 19 / 7 pm

1974, dir. William Klein
with Muhammad Ali, Sonny Liston, Malcolm X
111 min, 35mm

Consisting of two parts, Klein’s electric portrait of the iconic Ali documents key moments in his life, inside and outside the ring. Part one, in black and white, documents the fighter’s famous world heavyweight championship fight against Sonny Liston in ’64, when he was still Cassius Clay, as well as their rematch in ’65, after Clay joined the Nation of Islam and became Muhammad Ali. Part two, in color, finds Ali ten years later, preparing for his comeback match against George Foreman (the legendary “Rumble in the Jungle”) and dealing with the tremendous media coverage and public interest that stem from his willingness to call out his nation’s failures during this highly tumultuous time in American history.
