As a child growing up in Korea, Misun Won loved making things with her hands. Studying jewelry at Hanyang University, South Korea, was a natural step for her, and after graduation she enrolled in an MA program at Edinburgh College of Art to broaden her artistic and cultural perspective. She has lived and worked in the UK ever since. The influences of both countries can be seen in her work: a major inspiration is Korean patchwork, but she interprets this highly traditional form through Western fractal geometry. While her artistic interpretation of color, form and texture is significantly influenced by her current surroundings in Britain, she also wanted to imbue her jewelry with the essential function of Korean patchwork: a means of carefully and respectfully wrapping something to preserve good fortune. In this regard, Won’s jewelry is not only ornamental, but functions as a lucky charm for its wearers.
