Leyla Taranto is an Istanbul-based designer who makes jewelry using remnants of picture frames. Her designs explore ideas, shape, texture, and color through the lens of childhood memories and a grown-up love for seeing the world from new perspectives. Through experimentation with contrasts and concepts, she has found that it is possible to elevate so-called “low” materials through a series of creative choices. Taranto knows that whatever the starting point of her design—whether concept, material, or form—after it becomes a concrete object, the wearer will attach a different set of values to it. Nevertheless, she likes to imagine one of her pieces evoking in the wearer a memory similar to those that led her to design it.
