Born and based in Norway, Åse-Marit Thorbjørnsrud is fascinated by insects—their shapes, their colors, and in particular the way they build their nests. In creating her jewelry, she draws on the beauty and complexity of the wasp’s nest, starting with one cell that multiplies into a larger construction in which light is caught, amplified, and shifted by movement. Inspired by origami, Thorbjørnsrud seeks to transfer elements of the technique and its expression to metal, with a focus on simplicity, rhythm, light, and shadow.
