Reconfiguring Rhinestones

Sat, Jun 15 / 1 pm

Rhinestones as we know them today call to mind costume jewelry, cellphone cases, and the king of rock and roll. Named after the European river Rhine, where the rock crystals were originally collected, they became popular in the 18th century, when a French jeweler discovered he could create a diamond-like appearance by using small pieces of glass with metal coating. Thus, a diamond substitute was born.

In this afternoon-long hands-on workshop, students will draw inspiration from the both high and lowbrow world of rhinestones to create one-of-a-kind wearable jewelry. Students will be provided an array of rhinestone pieces to assemble, alter, and reconfigure into unique wearable works. Participants will also have the opportunity to paint and color clear rhinestones to create a fresh look, and comb vintage elements for a maximum personal style statement. The workshop’s primary focus will be necklaces and bracelets.

All materials provided. No previous experience required.
