Members’ Trip: Baltimore, MD

Join the Museum of Arts and Design for an overnight trip to Baltimore, MD to explore the arts, crafts and design of Charm City with MAD’s Chief Curator, Lowery Stokes Sims. Highlights of the trip include guided visits at the Evergreen Museum & Library, Baltimore Clayworks, American Visionary Art Museum, and Walters Art Museum. The curator-led trip includes a one-night stay in Baltimore’s Inner Harbor at Hotel Monaco.

8:00am: Guests meet at the Museum at 2 Columbus Circle
8:30am: Departure from MAD
Guests will travel via private chartered bus to Baltimore, MD.
Boxed lunch will be provided on route to first visit.

Goya Contemporary
The group will meet Executive Director Amy Raehse and artist Joyce J. Scott, who will be featured in MAD’s upcoming exhibition Multiple Exposures: Jewelry and Photography. Scott will present a selection of her latest works in jewelry. Goya Contemporary promotes the art and culture of our time and fosters the work of mid-career artists.

Evergreen Museum & Library
The visit will include a curator-led tour of the galleries and current exhibitions. Housed in a former Gilded Age mansion, Evergreen Museum & Library has a fine and decorative arts, rare books and manuscripts assembled by two generations of the philanthropic Garrett family. The collections of Evergreen afford a unique perspective regarding the evolution of American collecting taste and connoisseurship, from the post-Civil War industrial revolution to the modern jet age.

Baltimore Clayworks
Executive Director Sarah McCann will guide the group through the galleries and facilities. Founded by nine artists in 1980, Clayworks is a non-profit ceramic art center that exists to develop, sustain, and promote an artist-centered community that provides outstanding artistic, educational, and collaborative programs in ceramic arts.

Check-in
Hotel Monaco Baltimore
Dinner will be at the B&O American Brasserie located in the Hotel Monaco. B&O is a modern American restaurant featuring seasonal, locally sourced ingredients.

The Walters Art Museum
Curator Joneath Spicer will lead the group through the Chamber of Wonders—a replica of a17th-century collection of artworks and natural wonders from around the world. The Walters Art Museum’s collection presents an overview of world art from pre-dynastic Egypt to 20th-century Europe, and counts among its many treasures Greek sculpture and Roman sarcophagi; medieval ivories and Old Master paintings; Art Deco jewelry and 19th-century European and American masterpieces.

American Visionary Art Museum
Guests will be greeted by founder and director Rebecca Hoffberger, who will give a tour of the current exhibition Human, Soul & Machine: The Coming Singularity. In 1984, the American Visionary Art Museum was founded by Hoffberger with the idea for a unique new museum and education center that would emphasize intuitive creative invention.   

Lunch will be at Mr. Rain’s Fun House located in the American Visionary Art Museum. The restaurant presents a season sensitive menu which incorporates influences from a myriad of cultures that make up America today.

We will depart immediately after lunch for New York.

*7:00pm: Projected arrival back at 2 Columbus Circle

TRIP NOTES
CANCELLATIONS & REFUNDS:
Participants may cancel their trip up until Friday, March 7, 2014. After that date, the full cost of the trip is non-refundable. The Museum of Arts and Design reserves the right to cancel the trip if there are fewer than 15 participants or for unforeseeable circumstances. Upon reservation, participants assume responsibility for their physical abilities to travel and must notify the Museum of any health or physical conditions and/or allergies (including dietary restrictions) that may hinder their ability to fully participate in this trip.

RESERVATION AND ITINERARY POLICY: This trip may be limited to 25 participants and reservations will be taken in order of receipt on a first-come, first-served basis. The itinerary provided is provisional. If any changes are made, be assured that the quality of the program will be maintained. The trip includes transportation via private coach; pick-up and drop off at the Museum of Arts and Design; curatorial comment; one night accommodations (additional room charges and services used is not included), lunch and dinner (alcohol is not included with any meals); gratuities; admission fees, administration costs; and tour preparation. We encourage you to wear comfortable shoes and dress appropriately for the weather.

*Please note that we cannot guarantee an exact return time to the Museum of Arts and Design due to traffic and unforeseen road conditions. All participants will return to the Museum of Arts and Design in New York City. The coach cannot make stops before returning to the Museum.

Please review our health and safety protocols before you arrive. MAD strongly recommends all visitors six months and older are vaccinated against Covid-19 and visitors ages two and up wear face coverings, even if vaccinated. Thank you for your cooperation.
