Brooklyn Makers: Thursday, July 17, 2014

UM Project
The group will meet the founder of UM Project, François Chambard who will give the group a tour of his studio. Chambard will discuss his current projects and work featured in the NYC Makers exhibition. UM stands for Users and Makers, founded in 2004 as a hybrid between artisanship and consultancy—they design and manufacture furniture, one piece at a time or in series for various clients, large and small.
Fredericks and Mae
The group will meet the art/design team of Jolie Mae Signorile and Gabriel Fredericks Cohen behind Fredericks & Mae. The two met through a shared love for material— Fredericks & Mae started in the piles of feathers, thread, gold and paper that decorated their first studio in 2007. Their collaborative practice has since evolved into a series of objects for the home, garden and sky.
Lunch
A pre-fixe lunch will be provided at a local seasonal restaurant.
Situ Studio
The group will tour the design studio and the fabrication shop with co-founder Aleksey Lukyanov-Cherny. Situ Studio was founded in 2005 in Brooklyn, while its four partners were studying architecture at the Cooper Union. Transitioning directly from school to opening an office, the classmates-turned-business-partners developed a model of practice that leveraged their collective interests in design, research and fabrication to create a studio uniquely equipped to explore a wide range of spatial issues.
Kings County Distillery
The group will tour the distillery and have a behind-the-scenes look at how whiskey and bourbon is made. Kings County Distillery is New York City’s oldest operating whiskey distillery, the first since prohibition. Founded in 2010 by Colin Spoelman and David Haskell, they create handmade moonshine and bourbon out of the 115-year-old Paymaster Building in the Brooklyn Navy Yard. Kings County Distillery uses New York grain and traditional distilling equipment to make distinctive whiskey.

Manhattan Makers: Friday, July 25, 2014

Steven and William Ladd
The group will tour the design studio of New York-based artists and brothers, Steven and William Ladd. In 2000, the Ladd brothers moved to Brooklyn and established a design studio. The brothers have dedicated the past thirteen years collaborating on hand sewn boxes containing meticulously constructed environments related to their shared memories. Their work incorporates text, drawing, sculpture, installation, performance, and fashion.
Miriam Ellner
The group will meet designer Miriam Ellner and tour her studio where she creates unique works in Verre Eglomisé— a process of gilding precious metals on the reverse side of glass, etching in a design and setting it off with color. She is one of the few artists who has mastered this rare art form, and has been innovating and expanding upon it since 1990. Ellner has used Eglomisé in a variety of ways, both modern and classic, with many diverse applications including curved ceilings, rooms of glass, sandwich doors, tables, glass paintings, powder rooms and elevator cabs.

Dieu Donné
The group will tour Dieu Donné, which houses a professional papermaking studio, gallery and archive. Artistic Director Paul Wong will demonstrate papermaking. Dieu Donné is a non-profit organization dedicated to the creation, promotion, and preservation of new contemporary art utilizing the hand papermaking process. The organization’s primary services and programs are devoted to working with mid-career and emerging artists to develop new, innovative methods of papermaking within the medium and the greater world of contemporary art.
Parsons-Meares
The group will meet Sally Ann Parsons, the founder of Parsons-Meares and tour the workshop to get a behind-the-scenes look at how costumes are created. Established in 1980, Parsons-Meares, Ltd. is one of the premier costumes shops in New York City. The shop builds custom made costumes for the theater, dance and film industries, as well as for Broadway hits such as Starlight Express, Phantom of the Opera, Cats, Aspects of Love, Lion King, the Wizard of Oz on Ice, Alladin on Ice, and Beauty and the Beast on Ice.

CANCELLATIONS & REFUNDS: Participants may cancel their trip(s) up until Thursday, July 10, 2014. After that date, the full cost of the trip is non-refundable. The Museum of Arts and Design reserves the right to cancel the trip(s) if there are fewer than 15 participants or for unforeseeable circumstances. Upon reservation, participants assume responsibility for their physical abilities to travel and must notify the Museum of any health or physical conditions and/or allergies (including dietary restrictions) that may hinder their ability to fully participate in this trip.
RESERVATION AND ITINERARY POLICY: Each trip may be limited to 25 participants and reservations will be taken in order of receipt on a first-come, first-served basis. The itineraries provided are provisional. If any changes are made, be assured that the quality of the program will be maintained. The trip(s) include(s) transportation via private coach; pick-up and drop off at the Museum of Arts and Design; curatorial comment; lunch (alcohol is not included with any meals); gratuities; admission fees, administration costs; and tour preparation. We encourage you to wear comfortable shoes and dress appropriately for the weather.
*Please note that we cannot guarantee an exact return time to the Museum of Arts and Design due to traffic and unforeseen road conditions. All participants will return to the Museum of Arts and Design. The coach cannot make stops before returning to the Museum.
