Damien Davis explores historical representations of blackness by seeking to unpack the visual language of cultures both domestic and abroad, questioning how representations of race are coded and decoded through craft, design, and digital modes of production.
In this iteration of MADmakes, visitors are invited to experiment with elements of Davis’ process, incorporating plexiglass symbols into individual sculptures and assemblages using a variety of hardware, while exploring the ways in which visual languages and icons can serve as expressions of the self.
Led by MAD’s artists-in-residence, MADmakes is a drop-in, hands-on series where visitors can test their skills at art making and creative production. MADmakes provides an opportunity for visitors to better understand and appreciate the workmanship that goes into contemporary studio practice today. Visitors of all ages, backgrounds, and skill levels are invited to create something new every month.
