Join us for a special New York City Jewelry Week breakfast edition of In the MAD Loupe, a monthly online discussion exploring the future of contemporary art jewelry hosted by associate curator Barbara Paris Gifford. This month, In the MAD Loupe will feature Jiro Kamata, known for his highly developed techniques and use of nontraditional materials, including optical lenses. Kamata's jewelry was recently on view at MAD in the exhibition Non-Stick Nostalgia: Y2K Retrofuturism in Contemporary Jewelry. Kamata will appear from Munich, where his solo exhibition, VOICES, is now on view at Bayerischer Kunstgewerbeverein.

About the artist
Jiro Kamata was born in Hirosaki, Japan, and trained at the Academy of Fine Arts, Munich. Kamata won the Goldsmith of the city Hanau Award in 2006 and the Förderpreis Award of Munich in 2011. His work is held in collections worldwide, including the Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum, New York, Die Neue Sammlung, Pinakothek der Moderne, Munich, the Hiko Mizuno College of Jewelry, Tokyo, and the Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam. His monograph Jiro Kamata: Voices was published by Arnoldsche in 2019.
