1980, dir. William Klein with Little Richard 92 min, Digital
When Klein seeks out the flamboyant performer, rock-and-roll star, and writer of the huge hits “Tutti Frutti” and “Long Tall Sally,” he finds him in Nashville, selling “black heritage Bibles” and pursuing his higher calling as an Evangelist, abandoning the secular limelight for the second time in his career. Halfway through the film, Little Richard disappears, abandoning his sales position and Klein’s camera. Instead of giving up on the project, Klein continues to roll, turning to Little Richard’s friends and family in Macon, Georgia, and his long trail of fans, to find out what he means to all those he has inspired.
