The behind the scenes of dance making merges with center stage in Larissa Velez-Jackson’s work, Star Crap Method. Using tongue-in-cheek humor, Velez-Jackson questions the skill sets expected of today’s “stars” and the methods used to create them. Over the course of the evening, a trio of performers collectively composes the entire work in the moment, including the music score of live vocals, digital sound, and accompanying narrative text. Through this practice, much that is traditionally hidden from the spectator–and one’s fellow collaborators–is revealed, creating a risky and oftentimes absurd exposé of the inner workings of dancer and theater in process. Star Crap Method smashes together process and product, obscurity and celebrity, ugliness and beauty, amateurism and virtuosity, into a whole new method of creating dance.
