Jewelry Day

Sat, Sep 15 / 12–5 pm

Join MAD for an afternoon of jewelry-related activities. This educational celebration will include jewelry artists working in the Open Studios, a jewelry focused tour of the galleries, and film screenings exploring the Bauhaus techniques on display in the exhibition Space Light Structure: the Jewelry of Margaret De Patta.

12:00-1:30 and 2:30-5:00-  Jewelry-making demonstrations by Lara Knutson, Kiel Mead, and Emily Miranda in the Open Studios. Each of these designer brings a fresh approach to wearable art, certain to surpise and delight.

Open Studios resident Lara Knutson uses a reflective glass fiber to create a situation where the viewer sees a flash of light.  What she love most about this material is that everyone in a room is seeing something different.

Out of matchsticks, car keys, previously chewed gum, string and even onomatopoeias, Kiel Mead fashions jewelry which is overtly non-descript into pieces of desire. His approach to design wields results both remarkable and unexpected.

Emily Miranda's creations are imagined as treasured specimens- fantastical objects or creatures washed up on a beach or hidden in a forest, waiting to be discovered by the discerning and inquisitive collector.

3:00- Highlights tour of the museum and exhibitions with jewelry specialist Judy Becker

Ongoing- sceening of "The Face of the Twentieth Century Bauhaus" in the theater. "Let us create the new building of the future together; it will combine architecture, sculpture, and painting in a single form."  With this vision, Walter Gropius, in 1919, opened the Staatliche Bauhaus Weimar, which was to become one of the most influential schools of art, design and architecture. Artists  Moholy-Nagy,  Kandinsky,  Klee among others taught there and, together with directors Gropius and Mies van der Rohe, led the Bauhaus to embody reform, experimentation and the avant-garde. Through artworks, archival records andinterviews, this film delves into the story of the school and its protagonists. 49 minutes.

All activities are free with museum admission and do not require reservations. Jewelry Day has been organized in support of LOOT: MAD About Jewelry, an annual exhibition and sale of one-of-a-kind contemporary jewelry.
