Funeral Parade of Roses (1969)
Director: Toshio Matsumoto
105 min / B&W / Japanese with English Subtitles
DCP

Set against the backdrop of 1960s underground Tokyo nightlife, Funeral Parade of Roses loosely adapts Oedipus Rex as it follows Eddie, a bar hostess who ignites a love-triangle with the club’ owner and reigning drag queen Leda. In this pop- art kaleidoscopic vision, avant-garde aesthetics, narrative drama and experimental documentary are blended as it creates a groundbreaking look into Japan’s queer subcultures.

This film event is part of OUT at the Moviesa cinema series to accompany the exhibition OUT of the Jewelry Box.  Inspired by the exhibition's focus on queer perspectives expressed in art jewelry, the series draws attention to the role of film in the construction of queer stories.
