Digital Drop-in: Paper Lanterns (in Mandarin)

Sign on for a live artist-led tutorial on experimenting with craft and design processes using materials found at home. During this fun and informal workshop, artist and MAD artist educator Jocelyn Hsin-Ju Yang will demonstrate how to make paper lanterns for Lunar New Year.

MAD’s Digital Drop-ins are for participants of all ages, backgrounds, and skill levels. Following the demonstration, participants will have time to independently work on their project and share with “neighbors” in the virtual class.

All Digital Drop-ins are 45 minutes. Registrants will receive an email 24 hours in advance of the program with instructions for accessing the workshop on Zoom.

Suggested Materials

  • Pencil
  • Red construction paper (or other paper with similar thickness). *paper lanterns for Lunar New Year are traditionally in red, but it's your choice*
  • Scissors
  • Printer paper, parchment paper, tracing paper, or other translucent sheets
  • Adhesive materials: tape, glue stick, or glue
  • Cardboard
  • Battery-operated lights 
  • Optional: Needle and thread

About the artist

Jocelyn Hsin-Ju Yang, born and raised in Taiwan, is a museum educator and ceramist based in Brooklyn. She is an advocate for equity and justice for underrepresented communities. Dedicated to making art accessible to all, she founded ART WITH PANDA to promote art education among Mandarin-speaking communities. She encourages individual and collective learning to broaden the understanding of oneself and the world in her teaching practice. She received her MA in museum education and art history from the City College of New York, CUNY. She now works as a museum educator at the Museum of Arts and Design, the Rubin Museum of Art, and the Brooklyn Museum. Her work can be found at jocelynyang.com.
