Carcasses

(Denis Côté, 2009, Canada)
72mins, Digital Projection

A radically unusual blend of fiction and documentary filmmaking, Carcasses centers on Jean-Paul Colmor, who at 74 years old is worn out. He has dedicated his life to collecting indiscriminately: cars, car parts, car wrecks and just about anything else he can find. Colmor lives amongst the rubble of his life, working tirelessly to maintain an impossible mechanical ecosystem that is crumbling around him. He sells, bargains and pawns his clutter to other mechanics and collectors, until a group of trespassers violently interrupt his business. Carcasses is a cinematic distortion of reality that contextualizes Côté’s later work, currently on view in the exhibition In Time: The Rhythm of the Workshop. (In French with English subtitles)
