A finalist for the Museum's 2019 Burke Prize, Tanda Francis creates monumental heads and masks inspired by African art traditions for public and personal spaces. She draws upon ancient customs and rituals as a significant means of understanding and addressing our contemporary condition. In this video, Francis introduces her design for a monument honoring Shirley Chisholm, the first Black woman elected to Congress and the first Black woman to run for the presidential nomination of a major party. The design was a finalist for the She Built NYC competition sponsored by the NYC Department of Cultural Affairs Percent for Art program.
