For the exhibition Atmosphere for Enjoyment: Harry Bertoia’s Environment for Sound, the Museum of Arts and Design commissioned two new sound and video recordings at the Sonambient Barn from New York-based musicians Lizzi Bougatsos and Robert Aiki Aubrey Lowe. Bougatsos’ project Gang Gang Dance has been described as percussiveminded with influences ranging from Brian Eno to world music. Under the alias Lichens, Lowe creates live, spontaneous compositions often described as otherworldly. The artists’ work, influences, emphases on percussion, ambient music, and dedication to improvisation made them compelling performers to relate to and animate the sounding sculptures installed at the Sonambient barn, an experience both artists reflect on here.
