MAD’s Public Programs in November center around the virtue of bright, informative dialogue and hands-on workshops. Highlights include:

• Balli Plastici, a digitally animated rendition of the critically acclaimed marionette show, presented as part of Performa 09, will premier on Thursday, November 12, 2009
• A free shuttle to the Bartow-Pell Mansion Museum in the Bronx to view the exhibition HOME | LAND: Centuries Collide. View the latest in contemporary Dutch design intermingled with the 19th century collections of the Greek Revival Mansion.

Studio Sundays: Death by a Thousand Papercuts

This hands-on crafts workshop is geared towards the entire family and focuses on the physicality of “making” and the sensual and tactile qualities of materials. Inspired by Halloween, visitors will make scary paper sculptures and look at ghouls, zombies and all art presented as part of Slash: Paper Under the Knife, featuring art objects made out of cut, burned, or shredded paper.

The web is a constantly changing medium; for designers eager to try their hand at making websites, it can be daunting. AIGA/NY presents an open discussion with the designers who have bridged the divide between print and web materials, offering an insightful look at the actual meaning behind web design.

Exploring various ways in which artists have created sculptural works from MAD’s current exhibition, Slash: Paper Under the Knife, participants will design and create innovative 3-dimensional artwork using the exciting art of slot building and various patterning techniques as part of this hands-on workshop.

The Society for Environmental Graphic Design hosts their fall workshop at MAD, exploring how designers and clients collaborate when creating dynamic signage in museums. The workshop uses MAD’s award-winning way-finding signage as a departure point, and visits other sites in New York City on Thursday afternoon and Friday. All participants are eligible to receive AIA credit.

Performa 2009: Balli Plastici

As part of Performa 2009, MAD premiers a digitally animated rendition of the celebrated Balli Plastici (The Plastic Ballets), a marionette show first performed in Rome to great acclaim in 1918 by the Italian Futurist Fortunato Depero. An interactive DVD will be distributed at the screening that allows participants to choreograph the movements of the animated characters while devising new combinations for the sets, music, and lighting. An age-old material, paper has been used as the foundation for artwork for centuries, inspiring artistic traditions all over the world. In this workshop, participants will look at some of the many way this most basic of materials can be manipulated before creating their own designs by cutting, ripping, creasing, folding, twisting, shredding, or weaving everything from magazine pages to cardboard.

One Wednesday each month, MAD opens its studios for a hands-on workshop with the pros! This is the perfect opportunity to learn a new technique or hone your D.I.Y. skills, creating a unique object to give or cherish. Mixed media artist Rachel Miller will enable aspiring fiber artists of all ages and skill levels to create a unique felted piece to give or cherish. Participants will learn various felting techniques, experiment with color combinations and explore infinite fiber patterns. Each participant will create their own 3-dimensional pouch for their own personal treasures. All materials will be provided.

In Print/In Process: Artist Talk and Open Studio Demonstration with Dan Funderburgh

Dan Funderburgh is a wallpaper designer and artist in Brooklyn. His patterns, prints, and installations are varied in content, but all demonstrate an unabashed love for decorative arts. With influences ranging from Moorish mosaic to American pop art, the work is a repudiation of the fabricated schism between art and decoration. Dan will give an illustrated talk about his inspirations and projects, demonstrate aspects of his design process, and show samples of his finished projects
In Print/In Process is a series of talks and studio demonstrations by artists featured in the current issue of American Craft magazine. This partnership program offers access to some of today’s most innovative makers and designers, and brings the articles to life in MAD's Open Studios.

Participants of this hand-s on workshop will look at the relationships of contemporary artists with their work and engage with various mediums, deconstructing and reconstructing one-of-a-kind sculptures.

It is important to look at objects and artwork that are made of synthetic materials with a critical eye. During this workshop, participants will look at various pieces, including jewelry made out of synthetic materials, to address the strengths and weaknesses of synthetic materials in artwork. Participants will be making small sculptures or wearable art using these unnatural materials.
