Highlights of MAD's public programs in September include an entire day (September 12), dedicated to Jewelry design, featuring renowned jewelry artists exploring materials and techniques that are making contemporary jewelry one of today's most exciting art forms.

In conjunction with the Museum's exhibition of the winners of the Abraaj Capital Art Prize Savita Apte, Chair of the Abraaj Capital Art Prize, will discuss unique issues surrounding the creation and exhibition of contemporary art in the Middle East on September 10. The Abraaj Capital Art Prize is the first art prize for contemporary artists from that region. The work of the three winners will be on view at the Museum through October 4, 2009.

MAD's Studio Sundays, hands-on workshops for children and their parents, includes this month From Junk to Jewelry, a hands-on workshop exploring contemporary jewelry made from found materials and objects on September 6.

This hands-on crafts workshops is geared towards the entire family and focuses on the physicality of "making" and the sensual and tactile qualities of materials. Participants explore the Museum's contemporary jewelry collection and create their own personal jewelry pieces made from found materials and objects.

Abraaj Capital Art Prize Program with Curator Savita Apte

In conjunction with the Museum's exhibition of the winners of the Abraaj Capital Art Prize Savita Apte, Chair of the Abraaj Capital Art Prize, along with curators Leeza Ahmady and Carol Sullivan will discuss unique issues surrounding the creation and exhibition of contemporary art in the Middle East, North Africa, and South Asia. The Abraaj Capital Art Prize is the first art prize for contemporary artists from this region. The work of the three winners, on view at the Museum through October 4, 2009, includes an installation by Zoulikha Bouabdellah (Algeria) which references ancient Persian astrology and Arab legend; an experimental film by Kutlug Ataman (Turkey), based on a Turkish fable that looks to illustrate the tension between Turkey's eastern heritage and its western outlook and a classic Persian carpet design by Nazgol Ansarinia (Iran) with scenes from contemporary local Iranian life.

Featuring renowned jewelry artists including Ed Brickman, Robert Ebendorf, Thomas Gentille, Susan Kingsley from Ethical Metalsmiths, Tamiko Kawata, Daniella Kerner, Miriam Mirna Korolkovas, Linda MacNeil, Robert Lee Morris, and Jiří Šibor, MAD's Jewelry Study Day explores materials, techniques and artistic expressions that are making contemporary jewelry one of today's most exciting art forms.

The program includes a class in silver forging with Ed Brickman (10:00am-1:00pm), demonstrations in MAD's Open Studios with Tamiko Kawata and Miriam Mirna Korolkovas (11:00am-1:00pm), a tour of the GlassWear exhibition with curator Ursula Ilse-Neuman and artists Thomas Gentille, Linda MacNeil, and Jiří Šibor (2:00-3:00pm), and culminates in a panel discussion, 3:00-4:00pm, with some of the most innovative and celebrated studio jewelers working today, including presentations by Robert Ebendorf, Daniella Kerner, Susan Kingsley from Ethical Metalsmiths, and Robert Lee Morris. Open Studio Celebration

Meet the artistic residencies of MAD's Open Studios artists and see and talk to them about their latest work in clay, glass, fiber, metal, and mixed media. These artists have been offering Museum visitors a behind-the-scene look at artist studio practices by presenting their work, talking about their techniques, and experimenting with innovative materials and processes in the MAD Open Studios. The Open Studios Celebration highlights the rich artistic talent and resources housed and nurtured in the Sarah and Seth Glickenhaus Center on MAD's 6th floor Educational Department.

In Print/In Process: Artist Talk with Kathy Erteman

MAD and American Craft magazine present In Print/In Process, a series of talks and studio demonstrations by artists featured in the current issue of the magazine. Come and meet today's most innovative makers and designers, who bring the articles to life in MAD's Open Studios. New York City-based ceramic artist and designer Kathy Erteman will speak about her recent architectural wall pieces, vessels and tableware design for industry including her recent work in Yunnan, China with Tibetan Potters, as a design consultant for Aid to Artisans/The Mountain Institute/USAID.

Introduced as part of MAD and American Craft magazine's In Print/In Process, New York City-based ceramic artist Kathy Erteman will be demonstrating her technique and process to museum visitors at MAD's Open Studios. Erteman studied with Adrian Saxe at UCLA, and worked with Judy Chicago on the acclaimed artwork Dinner Party. Her work has been exhibited internationally and is included in private and public collections including Renwick Gallery/Smithsonian Institute, Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Taipei Museum of Fine Arts and SC Johnson Collection.
