Highlights of MAD's public programs in October center around the Museum's upcoming exhibition Slash: Paper Under the Knife. Slash signifies the art world's revived interest in the artistic possibility of paper as a medium for powerful expression and unique process featuring over 50 international artists who cut, burn, tear or shred paper to create mind-blowing artworks. The programs include:

• Gallery Night with the Artists on October 15, an evening of personal tours of the exhibition led by Chief Curator David McFadden and artists whose work is featured in the exhibition.
• An afternoon in the Open Studios, October 17, where Slash artist Mia Pearlman will demonstrate her techniques as she transforms ordinary paper into inspiring cloud-like sculptures.
• A screening of the silhouette animation classic The Adventures of Prince Achmed by Lotte Reiniger on October 29, presented with a live piano performance by Donald Sosin of his original score for the film
• An afternoon of hands-on creativity in the Museum's classrooms with a Mexican Day of the Dead celebration on October 31. Participants will make personally inspired artwork using the traditional cut paper techniques.

Open Studios, with fiber artist Consuelo Jimenez Underwood

Artist Consuelo Jimenez Underwood, featured in MAD's permanent collection, will be in the Open Studios demonstrating her table-loom weaving techniques. Underwood is a contemporary Latina fiber artist who has exhibited her work nationally and internationally. Her weavings and textile/fiber artworks communicate Consuelo's political and social viewpoints. In various works, Consuelo modernizes her textiles by including other media such as gold, barbed wire, caution tape, and silk screening on images. A professor in the School of Art & Design at San Jose State University in California for more than twenty years, she has also lectured and consulted throughout her academic career. Her work is included in the permanent collections of the Smithsonian Art Museum, The Mexican Museum, and the National Hispanic Center in Albuquerque, NM.

Gallery Night with the Artists

Curator David McFadden and artists whose work is part of Slash: Paper Under the Knife, will take visitors on a personal tour of the Museum's Slash: Paper Under the Knife exhibition, on view until April 4, 2010.

Slash features over 50 international artists, including Thomas Demand, Olafur Eliasson, Tom Friedman, Nina Katchadourian, Judy Pfaff, and Kara Walker, who cut, burn, tear or shred paper to create mind-blowing artworks ? sculptures, installations, animated videos. Many artists have never been shown in the US, including Tomás Rivas from Chile who will create a rendering of Baroque artist Andrea Pozzo's dramatic trompe l'oeil Apotheosis of St. Ignatius. Other highlights include Brazilian-born artist Célio Braga's floor-to-ceiling wall of memorial wreaths and garlands comprised of thousands of small flowers cut from prescription drug instructions. British artist Chris Kenny will create a new, fictional city, from deconstructed maps, while French-born artist Beatrice Coron will produce an ambitious vista, Heavens and Hells.

Artist Mia Pearlman, whose art work is included in the exhibition Slash: Paper Under a Knife, will discuss the ideas, inspirations, and processes of her work and will also demonstrate the techniques she uses for creating her fantastical cut paper sculptures to museum visitors at MAD's Open Studios. Her work is exhibited on the 4th and 5th galleries and is sold at the Store at MAD.

In collaboration with Print magazine , MAD presents a discussion featuring Andrea Dezsö and other artists from the exhibition Slash: Paper Under a Knife. Artists will discuss their inventive uses of paper-cutting techniques, the importance of the materials in their works, and the new face of this traditional art-form. This event will be moderated by the Museum's Chief Curator, David McFadden.

In conjunction with the exhibition Slash: Paper Under the Knife, MAD presents the oldest surviving animated film, The Adventures of Prince Achmed (1926), which interprets the tale of 1001 Nights with elegant, dream-like, and classic paper-cut animation. Directed by German filmmaker Lotte Reiniger, one of the most influential and revered animators in film history, The Adventures of Prince Achmed is the first ever animated feature film. Pianist and composer Donald Sosin will accompany this silent film with his original score, giving museum visitors a spectacular visual and audio experience.

Think Global, Cut Local: Mexican Day of the Dead

In conjunction with the Museum's exhibition, Slash: Paper Under the Knife, MAD welcomes visitors of all ages to celebrate Mexican Day of the Dead with a drop-in hands-on workshop where participants will learn the traditional technique of Papel Picado, one of the many cut paper traditions from around the world. Part of MAD's series to examine and explore the diverse cultural traditions of paper cutting.
