Ute Decker
London-based jeweler Ute Decker makes minimalist yet bold wearable sculptures, bending and twisting gold and silver into expressive three-dimensional “geometric poetry.” The distinct pieces take shape through experimental maquettes, which the artist wears for days, making continuous adjustments. This stage of refinement is a vital element, giving even her boldest signature pieces a surprising wearability and balance on the body. Reminiscent of Japanese calligraphy, the final pieces are then composed in spontaneous free-flowing movements, imbuing them with a rich expressiveness and energy. Combining the poetic with the political, the clean and pure lines of her jewelry reflect the purity and mindful choice of her material’s provenance: Decker predominantly works in recycled silver and was one of the very first worldwide to create pieces in fair-trade gold.
