2014 Artist In Residence

HARE

Martha is an interdisciplinary installation artist living in Manhattan. In the Artist Studios at MAD, m will investigate the common thread in recent text-based works, using cardboard, wood and mixed media to construct words, frames and other graphic elements.

Burgess’ interdisciplinary work reflects upon the process of observing, deciphering and subverting representations and meanings in a shifting, fluid culture. m often restages events while blending the collective and the personal, the complex and the minimal.

Burgess has received fellowships from the from the Guggenheim Foundation, New York Foundation for the Arts and the Jerome Foundation, and residencies from the MacDowell Colony, VCCA, Weir Farm, SIRIUS and the Elizabeth Foundation Studio Program, where she is currently a member. Recently, her work has appeared at the Brooklyn Artist Space, the Darst Center, the Islip Museum and the Center for Recent Drawing, London. Selected profiles of her work have appeared in The Paris Review, The New York Times, Art in America, New York Arts Magazine, The Brooklyn Paper, and The Houston Press. An Associate Professor at the New School, Parsons, m has guest lectured at Yale University, SUNY Albany, Montclair State University, the University of Connecticut and the College Art Association.
