My ceramic practice examines the intersections of food, culture, and value. At the forefront of my work is food psychology and the questioning of American consumption practices. I create satirized, sculptural portraits that critically examine the visual culture of food products within capitalist industries. By investigating the relationship between emotion and consumption, I explore themes of comfort, desire, anxiety, and guilt. My work pushes the boundaries of humor and horror by drawing from culinary histories, the spectacle of foodie culture and fads, and issues of sustainability within the food industrial complex. Clay as my primary artistic medium offers parallel processes, tactility, and creativity to cooking.— Lindsey (Lou) Howard
