Elif Uras’s ceramic sculptures and paintings explore shifting notions of gender and class. Her imagery merges traditional nonfigurative Turkish art with Western figurative traditions, while exploring the representation of the female body across cultures. At MAD, Uras will produce a series of wheel-thrown vessels that reference fertility goddesses depicted in Neolithic terra cotta figurines excavated in the Eastern Anatolia region of Turkey.
Uras has exhibited nationally and internationally, including exhibitions at the Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum, MoMA PS1, and the 9th Shanghai Biennale. She received an MFA from Columbia University, a BFA from the School of Visual Arts and BA from Brown University, and a JD degree from the Columbia University School of Law.
