Based in Binghamton, New York,Sophia Sophia makes bold, colorful earrings that can be viewed as wearable small sculptures. Made primarily in gold-plated brass, with some works utilizing brass or sterling silver, her handcrafted statement pieces are known for their unapologetic use of loud color and breadth of shape and scale. She draws inspiration from sources as varied as her own collection of patterned garments, freshly cut citrus fruit, Memphis design, 1950s Modernist jewelry, kinetic mobiles, and, most importantly, color. In our current digital landscape, Sophia finds comfort in creating everything by hand, using basic metalsmithing techniques that are rooted in traditional practices. She uses resin as a reliable source for color application but is always exploring other material options, most recently airbrushed auto paint.
