Born in Seoul, Mia Kwon is a jewelry artist based in Berlin. Her creative process originated in her desire to change the way people see porcelain jewelry. Kwon makes beautiful and surprising wearable objects that contradict some of the patterns usually associated with porcelain. She uses established techniques like slip casting in new ways, by sewing the very light elements together to make the larger dynamic pieces, and polishing them intensely to give them a super-slick surface. She also utilizes her metalsmithing abilities to incorporate new techniques, like layered casting, to create rich color patterns, resulting in works that shed a fresh, contemporary perspective on jewelry in porcelain.
