Jessica Thompson-Lee
Jessica Thompson-Lee is a ceramic artist and art educator based in New York. Though loosely inspired by images of microorganisms, fungi, coral, rock formations, the human body, and insects, her designs always start with and are primarily created during the playful, experimental, and unpredictable process of “drawing” with clay. Thompson-Lee uses a squeeze bottle to apply porcelain slip to a plaster slab, never knowing exactly how the designs will turn out. After firing, each piece undergoes a transformation. Some pieces become wearable art, while others are used as models for larger carved ceramic sculptures or as components of functional pieces. Some deviate from the medium of clay and are transformed into the language of materials such as bronze, aluminum, or resin.
