Deirdre Maine
A glass artist based in Burgundy, France, Deirdre Maine makes jewelry from discarded wine bottles. Salvaging glass from the endless supply of used bottles generated by wineries in Nuits-Saint-Georges, where her studio is situated, she uses both kilnforming and lampworking techniques to transform waste into adornment. Each design starts with a broken fragment or a rough cut of glass. Heat, time, and gravity ultimately determine the final organic forms, which are inspired by her natural surroundings and the material itself, giving a second life to an object destined for the waste stream.
