Haas Brothers: Uncanny Valley plunges visitors into the exuberant, uncanny worlds of twin artists Nikolai and Simon Haas. Largely self-taught, the duo’s practice is rooted in material experimentation. Marrying meticulous handcraft with a fluency in the latest technologies, the brothers produce works ranging from small ceramic sculpture to furniture to human-scaled installations.

In the exhibition, dynamic vignettes place the brothers’ fantastic creatures within otherworldly realms. The surrealistic, animistic, and zoomorphic, as well as humor and irreverence, abound within the Haas Brothers’ animal kingdom, hinting at the deeper well of emotions the artists are seeking to unleash and explore. An ecosystem of their own flora and fauna—hybrids of our world and their imagination—Haas Brothers: Uncanny Valley is a place strangely familiar but never seen before.

Haas Brothers: Uncanny Vallery is organized by Cranbrook Art Museum, Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, and curated by Laura Mott, Chief Curator, with support by Katy Kim, Curatorial Fellow.

Haas Brothers: Uncanny Vallery is made possible by the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of the Office of the Governor and the New York State Legislature, and is supported, in part, by public funds from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs in partnership with the City Council.

Additional support has been generously provided by Sarah Arison and Suzi Cordish.
