Visionaries! Gala

Tue, Nov 27 / 7:15 pm

The Museum of Arts and Design’s Visionaries!  2012 Scent Gala

Tuesday, November 27th, Mandarin Oriental, New York City

This year’s Visionaries! Gala and Awards Ceremony, Tuesday, November 27, 2012 at the Mandarin Oriental, will honor four individuals—titans of creativity, standard bearers in the luxury, fragrance, and design industries, whose work personifies the Museum’s mission to examine contemporary creativity across all media. The Gala’s theme, Scent, will delight and surprise as a window to The Art of Scent, the first museum exhibition to explore the design and aesthetics of olfactory art, opening at MAD this November.

2012 Visionaries! will recognize IFF’s Sophia Grojsman, a legendary perfumer who has created the most classic and iconic fragrances in the industry, as one of the greatest olfactory artists of the 20th century. Her works include Tresor, Paris, Eternity, Calyx and White Linen. Also honored is Karyn Khoury, The Estée Lauder Companies Senior Vice President Corporate Fragrance Development Worldwide. The Estée Lauder Companies is one of the world's most important patrons of the art of scent and Karyn is one of the most influential and indelible fragrance developers of our time. The 2012 Visionary! Lifetime Achievement Award will go to designers and entrepreneurs Joyce and Maya Romanoff, leaders of innovative wall coverings and surfacing materials that bring great design into our daily lives.  David McFadden, Chief Curator at MAD, describes Joyce and Maya as true examples of all things visionary: "If I were to highlight two traits that serve as foundation stones for the Romanoff firm and for its extended family of employees, it would be boundless creativity and generosity of spirit. Maya and Joyce's love of beauty is buttressed by their pursuit of quality in their production, and the integrity of their relationships with designers, craftsmen, and philanthropic institutions. They are respected and esteemed members of the MAD family and the Museum is thrilled to recognize their ongoing efforts to sustain the rich history of American artisan-made products."

The evening begins at 7:15pm with a reception and silent auction featuring an exclusive limited edition scent created by Sophia and Karyn, one-of-a-kind artist-made perfume bottles, luxury goods, design items, travel getaways, and dining packages. A seated dinner and the awards presentations will follow at 8:15pm. We are planning a special “scent dinner” that will be entertaining, interactive, and involve parallel dining experiences, one olfactory and invisible, the other delectable and delicious.  Patron Table purchasers will have the opportunity to spend the evening with an IFF master or senior perfumer at your table, personally guiding you through the dining experience.
