Taiwan: New Design & Traditional Craft

Tue, Sep 13–Fri, Sep 16

Fan, Yang-Wu, Pacific Wave, 2010.

In collaboration with the National Taiwan Craft Research and Development Center and Taipei Cultural Center in New York, MAD welcomes three artists from Taiwan to the Open Studios for a week of cultural exchange with visitors.

Twenty-first century’s digital age and globalization tendency creates an illusory atmosphere which makes cultural identity and the sense of belonging of cultural industries especially important. Traditional crafts have local history, cultural background and nature as its base and continue to attract other external forces. After the impact of the Industrial Revolution and the baptism of the twentieth century aesthetics, the craftsmanship has developed a crosscutting nature with a mix of design, fashion, nature and art. Materials in process under craftsman’s hands correspond to the attitude of contemporary craftsmanship and the expression of emotions towards craftsman’s homeland and their own culture.

Featured Artists

Chen, Shao- Yi, ceramics/animation
Fan, Yang- Wu, wood furniture
Su, Su- Jen, bamboo weaving

See these artists put a contemporary spin on traditional crafts this week in the Open Studios.

Please review our health and safety protocols before you arrive. MAD strongly recommends all visitors six months and older are vaccinated against Covid-19 and visitors ages two and up wear face coverings, even if vaccinated. Thank you for your cooperation.
