Studio Sunday: Organic Architecture

Sun, Sep 12, 2010

What is the difference between a wood shed and a stone building? Would you like to live in a tree house or a cave dwelling? How do different materials determine the form of what we build? After seeking inspiration in the galleries, we will create architectural models for buildings made from a range of natural materials and make up stories about their inhabitants.

About Studio Sundays

The lack of inhibitions of a child, the experience of a design student, the life skills of the retired businessperson, the feedback of the architect parent sitting side-by-side with their child, or the complete novice touching clay for the first time… there is much to be gained from gathering groups of mixed ages in the creation and discussion of works of art. At MAD, our goal is to make everyone feel comfortable and enthusiastic about the opportunity to learn through their hands while having a good time together in our galleries and studio.

Join MAD’s professional Artist Educators for Studio Sundays, MAD’s material- and process-rich hands-on workshops that focus on the physicality of “making” and the sensual and tactile qualities of materials. Each week we’ll provide an introduction to various mixed media—clay, metal, fiber, wood, glass, paper, rubber, etc.—and related studio activities that encourage the transformation of your ideas into art objects. Examples from our exhibitions serve as inspiration while you explore the creative process.
