The Mind’s Eye: A Computer Animation Odyssey Dir. Jan Nickman, 1990 40 min
Beyond the Mind’s Eye Dir. Michael Boydstun, 1992 50 min
One of the earliest examples of a film fully composed of computer-generated imagery (CGI), The Mind’s Eye: A Computer Animation Odyssey assembled the work of three hundred creative artists working across the field of animation. Compiled into a loose narrative, the myriad CGI content spans demo reels, commercials, music videos, and feature films, to tell the story of the creation of Earth, the rise of civilization, and what might lie beyond. Made to promote the possibilities of CGI during its infancy, The Mind’s Eye was a breakout hit, achieving multiplatinum sales and reaching as high as No. 12 on Billboard’s video sales chart.
It will screen with Beyond the Mind’s Eye, the second film in a series of four, which continues its predecessor’s goal of promoting the possibilities of computer animation in cinematic storytelling. Featuring a score by Grammy Award–winning Czech composer Jan Hammer, Beyond the Mind’s Eye follows planet-colonizing seeds that arrive via an asteroid.
