Cheryl R. Riley, a former advertising executive, is an artist, furniture designer, jewelry maker, mentor, and art advisor focusing on artists of the Black African Diaspora. During her career, she has created wall art, installations, site-specific public artworks, custom lighting, furniture designs, and, after making her first piece to wear for the opening of MAD’s Global Africa Project curated by Lowery Sims, jewelry. Since then, Riley often includes jewelry as a medium in her multidisciplinary work. Her art explores similarities between seemingly disparate cultures viewed through the lens of gender, history, rituals, implements, and symbols. Her furniture designs are in the permanent collections of Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum, the National Museum of African American History and Culture, the SF MoMA, the Oakland Museum, and The Mint Museum of Architecture and Design.
