1992, Dir. Gary J. Levinson With Ron Litman, Penny Arcade, and Michelle Bauer
Not only did VHS allow for the distribution of a broader array of films, the medium also sparked a new wave of shot-on-video genre filmmaking. Easily one of the most original, Hellroller is a slasher film featuring a wheelchair-bound serial killer. The film’s director, Gary Levinson, was a genre jack-of-all-trades; he acted in cult classics such as the Aquatic Nazi Zombie gem Shock Waves, and produced popular rentals such as Hollywood Chainsaw Hookers.
Starring scream queen Michelle Bauer, NYC performance art institution Penny Arcade, and musician Johnny Legend, Hellroller is a film like no other, showcasing the unprecedented permutations in filmmaking made possible by the advent of VHS.
