Garmenting: Costume as Contemporary Art

Tue, Nov 30, 2021

MAD Moments, a virtual program hosted by chief curator Elissa Auther, welcomes MAD’s Nanette L. Laitman Director Tim Rodgers and Alexandra Schwartz, curator of MAD’s upcoming exhibition Garmenting: Costume as Contemporary Art, opening on March 12, 2022. During the program, Elissa, Tim, and Alexandra will discuss this multi-artist extravaganza, featuring more than thirty works of art, craft, and costume from across the world. Hear their insights on the definition of “garmenting,” its unique role in the craft universe, and its fascinating contributions to contemporary art.

Together, they will explore the diverse works included in the show and the artists who have defined this genre, from art world giants such as Louise Bourgeois and Annette Messager to contemporary innovators including Nick Cave, Kent Monkman, Mary Sibande, Devan Shimoyama, Sanford Biggers, Saya Woolfalk and Zoë Buckman. Interact through the chat feature and stay tuned for the Q and A featuring special surprise guests! This event will be broadcast from The Theater at MAD before a LIVE studio audience for the first time.

The program will be held on November 30, Giving Tuesday, a national day of giving. As our gift to the MAD community, virtual access is provided free. Zoom registration is required. Closed captioning will be provided.

Members, Luminaries, and Patrons always have free access to MAD Virtual Programs. Join today and become part of the MAD family.
