The Boy Friend (1971) Dir. Ken Russell 137 min 35 mm
The Boy Friend is a musical extravaganza set in the French Riviera of the 1920s. After the star of a low-budget theater production sprains her ankle, the assistant stage manager, played by Twiggy, must perform in her place. With Ken Russell’s signature maximalism and spectacular costumes by Shirley Russell, The Boy Friend draws from a pastiche of Old Hollywood films and Busby Berkley musicals, creating a gloriously over-the-top Art Deco look.
One of Anna Sui’s all-time favorites, The Boy Friend combines two of Sui’s ongoing sources of inspiration: Art Deco and Twiggy.
