MAD will be open on Mon, May 6.

Black Figure 'Faux Greek' Workshop

Wed, Dec 1 / 1 pm

One Wednesday each month, MAD opens its studios for a hands-on workshop with the pros! This is the perfect opportunity to learn a new technique or hone your D.I.Y. skills, creating a unique object to give or cherish. Participants will make small terra cotta plates decorated with Syma's 'faux Greek' techniques.

After transforming slabs of clay into plates, this workshop will explore ancient Greek pottery images and other sources for design inspiration. We will apply black under glaze and incise unique sgraffito scratched lines to add details. These clay works will be once-fired and collected at a later date. The plates are safe for shelled, wrapped, imaginary food; and the playful process is meant to give wings to the imagination. No prior experience with ceramics is required, beginners welcome. All materials provided.

An innovative artist and art educator for more than thirty years, Syma has recently returned to New York City, after living in London, England, for nearly four years. While in the UK, she maintained a studio at Cockpit Arts. Syma has set up her new ceramic studio in Brooklyn and is currently at work on private and public art commissions in hand-made sculpted ceramic tiles, as well as works for galleries and shops. Currently a freelance Artist/Lecturer at the Metropolitan Museum of Art and Resident in the Open Studios at MAD, Syma is the artist formerly known as Marsha Syma Gordon Komarin Afia.
