Art of Korean Embroidery

Fri, Nov 4, 2011

Dr. Young Yang Chung at work.

Meet renowned embroiderer and textile historian Dr. Young Yang Chung and master artisan Kim Tae-ja in the Open Studios at MAD. This is a rare opportunity to see how two of Korea’s top fiber artists create such subtle visual illusions as light bouncing off glassware and the brilliance of fall foliage working with only needle and thread—and supreme skill.

Dr. Young Yang Chung is the author of Painting with a Needle (2003) and Silken Threads: A History of Embroidery in China, Korea, Japan, and Vietnam (2005).  Visiting artist Kim Tae-ja, a master embroiderer has been designated a living cultural treasure in Korea. Winner of a prestigious UNESCO Crafts Prize, Tae-ja teaches centuries-old embroidery techniques at the Chung Young Yang Embroidery Museum in Seoul, Korea. Together, for two days only, these masters will offer demonstrations of traditional and contemporary Korean embroidery techniques in the Open Studios on the sixth floor.

Don’t miss this rare opportunity to learn more about the art of Korean embroidery with two of its greatest living practitioners in conjunction with Korean Eye: Energy and Matter, on view November 1.

This demonstration is made possible by Dr. Young Yang Chung and the Seol Won Foundation.

Please review our health and safety protocols before you arrive. MAD strongly recommends all visitors six months and older are vaccinated against Covid-19 and visitors ages two and up wear face coverings, even if vaccinated. Thank you for your cooperation.

Korean Eye: Energy and Matter, in association with Standard Chartered, is also made possible by Dr. Young Yang Chung and the Seol Won Foundation.
